Afro-Cuban, Folkloric and Popular Dance and Percussion:

Courses, Classes and Performances in the UK

Over many years of running international courses and tours, we have developed a very special relationship with this exceptionally talented dance company from Guantanamo, Cuba.

 
The Danza Libre company was founded in August 1989 with the aim of cultivating folkloric and contemporary dance. Among its prominent founders, there stands the late Elfriede Mahler, a US Cuban resident since 1961 and acclaimed international dancer, who together with Ramiro Guearra, founded the Cuban National Dance Company. The first public performance of Danza Libre took place in 1990, and its spectacular folkloric and contemporary shows have since gained recognition throughout Cuba.

In the summer of 2000, following a series of successful international courses with the company in Cuba, Gary Newland, and his company Karamba World Music and Dance, organised the Company's first acclaimed tour of the UK, (and outside of Cuba), to celebrate their 10th Anniversary celebrations. The Company have since performed in many countries with appearances at venues and festivals such as WOMAD and The Royal Opera House amongst others.

Different popular and folkloric dance and percussion classes can be arranged here in the UK with the members of Danza Libre who are now permanently living in England, or, who travel here annually on working visits. These classes comprise of the following styles:

Folkloric and Popular Cuban dance with Guillermo Davis and co.
Folkloric dance including; Gaga, Vodu, Tumba Francessa and Congo Oriental. These dances have very strong African connections and are accompanied by live drums and vocals. Popular dance classes are also given including; Salsa, ChaChaCha, Bolero, Mambo and Rumba.

As well as the dance classes, percussion can be taught on instruments such as; congas, bata, maracas, guiro, bongos, whereby you can learn the classic rhythms of Son, Guaguanco and other Afro-Cuban styles.

Courses, classes and performances can take place in schools, community centres, universities, carnivals and events of all kinds. These can be given separately, or, combining both dance and music.
